Early Stage Researcher (ESR)

Pieterjan Desmet

I studied Political Sciences at the Catholic University of Leuven (KUL), with a particular interest for International Relations and European Cooperation. My master’s thesis was about environmental conflict management. I then obtained a rather historical master’s degree in European Studies at the KUL. Then I moved to Antwerp, where I studied Political Communication at the UA, and wrote a master’s thesis on Euroscepticism (`Euroscepticism: what`s in a frame?`). This particular line of interest led me to the vacancy at Amsterdam School of Communications Research (ASCoR). My specific approach to the study of European electoral democracy centers on the idea of satisfaction with democracy, and the variance among European countries concerning this specific measure. I intend to seek explanations for this variance, both at structural level (comparing the different nations) and at individual level. Apart from politics, my main interests are music, travelling and theater.

During my ELECDEM research contract I undertook periods of secondment at the University of Exeter (UK), Sabanci University (Istanbul Turkey) and the European Parliament (Brussels Belgium).
